I am so thrilled to tell you that my family is planning a trip to China. And I just cannot wait to meet up with you and experience your culture in person. To prepare for the coming trip, we have watched a TV programme about China yesterday. And I am extremely interested in the Chinese festivals, especially the Mid-Autumn Festival. But the programme didn’t go through the details, and I am wondering if you are kind enough to tell me something about it, maybe the history, the traditions or the activities that you usually hold on that special day. Teaching Contents: This lesson is about writing Max an email to introduce Chinese traditional festival the Mid-Autumn Festival. Teaching Objectives: (1) Knowledge objectives ① Students can master the right format of an email. ② Students can get more information about the Mid-Autumn Festival. (2) Ability objectives ① Students will be able to write emails. ② Students will be able to introduce Chinese traditional festival—the Mid-Autumn Festival. (3) Emotional objective Students will feel proud of our traditional culture, and be willing to carry it forward. Teaching Key and Difficult Points: (1) Teaching key point Students can write an email in right format. (2) Teaching difficult point Students can introduce the Mid-Autumn Festival with enough information to make it clear to people from foreign cultures. Major Steps: Step 1 Warming up (3 minutes) Show students some pictures about activities in the Mid-Autumn Festival. And then ask them to have a discussion about these pictures and write down the key words, sentences and so on. After the discussion, invite some students to describe these pictures. For example, they may describe the pictures as "They are having a big family reunion." "China started to celebrate the festival since Tang dynasty." Give some necessary guidance and corrections. (Justification: Vivid pictures can quickly attract students’ attention.) Step 2 Pre-writing (9 minutes) (1) Set up a situation for the students: Your name is Li Hua. Your pen-pal, Max, is coming from America with his parents. And he is writing to ask information about the Mid-Autumn Festival. (2) Show them the email from Max. Ask students to read the email first and figure out what kind of information does Max want. Later invite some students to share their answers. For example, they will find out that Max wants to know the history and traditions about the Mid-Autumn Festival. (3) After they figure out what they should write to Max, lead their attention to the format of Max’s email and remind them to pay attention to the salutation and the comma after it, as well as the greetings and so on. Then invite some students to clear out what they have got about email writing, and some other students to add up. For example, they will know after the salutation, we should put a punctuation-comma instead of colon, and instead of putting "Looking forward to seeing you soon." in the greetings part, we can also use "Best wishes/regards. Yours sincerely/truly." and so on. (4) After finishing the format, go to the main body part. Divide them into groups of 4 and ask them to have a discussion about the information that they want to convey in the email. And then ask them to redo the information that they have chosen within 5 minutes. During this section, they need to figure out: First, the writing order about the email. For example, they need to decide if they want to begin with the history then traditions or otherwise. Second, how to polish the expressions like "It has long history and it is traditional" . For example, they can reorganize the sentence into "the Mid-Autumn Festival is a traditional Chinese festival with long history." (Justification: Basing on an email given, students can find out the writing format and contents of the email.) Step 3 While-writing (5 minutes) First, ask students to write a main body of the email. While writing, ask them to pay more attention to the spelling, grammar, and the logic of sentences. Next, ask them to put the main part into an email format. (Justification: With all the preparation from pre-writing part, students will be able to write down the email fast. In this step, students can practice how to organize their words, and they will learn to express their ideas logically.) Step 4 Post-writing (3 minutes) After students finish the writing, ask them to modify their draft by themselves, and then exchange their draft to do the pair editing. Then ask some students to read their emails to the class, and let them give some suggestions together. (Justification: Peer editing helps students improve their ability to write and express their ideas by learning from each other.)
