Modern means of transportation, communication, advertising, and credit have all combined to create a giant new industry called tourism. Tourism is a service industry. It involves not selling a product that you can own but providing services on a temporary basis. The customer receives such things as a seat on an airplane, a room in a hotel, and a chance to sit on a beach in the sunshine. The customer may be traveling for pleasure, for business, or for many other reasons. Whatever the reason is, the traveler needs a way to travel and places to sleep and eat. To take care of these needs, tourism has created millions of jobs in hotels, restaurants and transportation companies.
