Read the texts from a magazine article about disagreeable companions. For questions 61 to 65, match the name of each person to one of the statements( A to G) given below. Mark your answers on your ANSWER SHEET.
Naomi:
I used to be on friendly terms with a girl in my class for a while. At first I really enjoyed her company, she was fun to be with and had a great sense of humor. But by and by, I noticed that everything had to be on her terms. She wanted to make all the decisions about what we should do, where we should go, who we would be friendly with, and so on. She turned out to be a bit of a control freak, so I found I couldn’t put up with her in the end.
Chet:
I used to get along well with Simon, and I still like him in many ways. But I don’t spend much time with him any more. Sure, he is very bright and interesting and has a great sense of humor, but the thing I noticed was that he hates to spend his own money. Whenever we went out together or with friends, he would always wait and let someone else pick up the bill. I remember last time we were at the restaurant and just before the waiter brought the check he went to the bathroom, so the rest of us would end up paying for it.
Liza:
I think it’s important for friendship to be two-way, and not dependent on one person all the time. I remember this girl that I used to be friendly with, and we seemed to get really well with each other. But she was the kind of person who never went out of her way to invite me anywhere and always expected me to call her and suggest doing something. Even when it was my birthday she never called to say happy birthday or gave me a card or anything. Whenever we did talk on the phone , the conversation was always about her and what she wanted to do. Never about me or other people. I couldn’t stand it after a while so I didn’t bother keeping in touch.
Toni:
I had this friend for a while a few month ago--she’s not really a friend anymore unfortunately. The more I got to know her, the more difficult I found her. At first I enjoyed her company because we had so much in common, but then I noticed that she would get angry at the slightest thing and she was always snapping at people if she didn’t like something they said or did, even the smallest thing, I’ll never forget this time I was supposed to see a movie with her and showed up about 10 minutes late and she just turned on me and said," Who do you think you are to keep me waiting like this? "When she started treating me like that, I soon realized I didn’t need a friend like her.
Kim:
I used to know some really nice people, but when the chips are down, they often turn out to be insensitive and self-centered, and worst of all, two-faced. It’s the kind of person who smiles to your face and stabs you in the hack. They can put on different masks, depending on what they want. Few days ago ,it was rumored that I was to be transferred to another post. I weighed the pres and cons of such a transfer, unable to make up my mind. It was then the "warm-hearted’" friend warned me of all the disadvantages of such a transfer and successfully talked me out of the idea. When I realized later that the "friend" himself took up the post and enjoyed all the accompanying advantages, it was too late.
Now match each of the articles to the appropriate statement.
Note: there are two extra statements.
Statements
[A] Friends should talk more about their similarities and avoid sensitive topics.
[B] Friend should be more broad-minded and tolerant, rather than getting easily annoyed at the slightest provocation.
[C] Friends shouldn’t interfere too much in each other’s private lives.
[D] Friend should be candid and sincere, rather than double-heed.
[E] Friends should have equal right in decision-making. No party should have the final say in everything.
[F] Friendship should be two-way and interactive, rather than self-centered.
[G] Friend shouldn’t avoid his share of responsibility especially when money is concerned.
