Undoubtedly, our world has changed a lot with the development of science and technology. Some people think that technology has made the world a better place to live. Do you agree or disagree with this? Write an essay of about 400 words to state your view on the following topic:
Has Technology Made The World a Better Place To Live?
In the first part of your essay you should state clearly your main argument, and in the second part you should support your argument with appropriate details. In the last part you should bring what you have written to a natural conclusion or a summary. Marks will be awarded for content, organization, grammar and appropriateness. Failure to follow the above instructions may result in a loss of marks.

It can’t be denied that our world has undergone great changes because of the development of science and technology. While many people are excited about the economic boom and industrial development brought forward, others indicate that technology has carried with it a lot of problems and worry that if developing to excess, it may one day destroy the planet we live in. As far as I am concerned, both of the viewpoints have validity because technology itself has both advantages and disadvantages. For one, it is true that high technology helps solve many problems and make our life more convenient. The introduction of computers has somehow helped increase the efficiency in almost every aspect of our life and together with Internet, computers make it possible for us to know everything without stepping out of our bedroom and keep in touch with friends afar by sending emails or chatting on line. As another example, the introduction of new technologies in increasing production has been very effective in expanding agricultural produce. These are just a few examples to illustrate the advantages of technological advancement. On the other hand, technology may bring a lot of problems .too. Industrial wastes have seriously polluted our environment, which in turn leads to a lot of illness and extinction of some plants and wild animals. In another word, environment is a price paid for industrial development. This price, which used to be considered acceptable, is now deemed as too high. Moreover, with Internet and mobile phones, we had expected a closer relationship with one another. But on the contrary, face to face communication is largely reduced, because emails and online chatting system can help us "talk" with our friends without seeing them. As a result, the distance between people is enlarged, not narrowed. Last but no least, high technology, while helping increase people’s working efficiency, accelerates the whole world’s pace and then leads to stress and pressure, which is proved by the increased number of psychological problems that today’s people have. It’s really difficult to say whether technology has done more benefits or harms. But I am convinced that technology itself has no fault and thus no responsibility to shoulder. The core of the problem is we human beings. It is the way we use technology that decides whether it has made or can make our world a better place to live, not technology itself. Therefore, what we should do is to take advantage of the technology, not to take disadvantage of it, while anticipating and avoiding the possible side effects it may bring us.
