YES
Genetically modified plants need fewer pesticides than ordinary plants. For example, there is a type of corn that kills insects that feed on it, so farmers use fewer pesticides to grow the corn, and there is less pollution to the environment. Also the corn is less expensive because farmers don’t have to spend much money on pesticides.
Genetically modified food grow well despite harsh conditions. One example is a type of genetically modified strawberry that can grow in cold weather. Farmers can plant this of strain strawberries earlier in the spring and later in the fall, when ordinary strawberries could not grow.
Genetically modified food stays fresh for a longer time. There is more time for delivery and sales, so less food is thrown away and wasted.
NO
It is believed that consumption of genetically engineered foods can cause the development of certain diseases immune to antibiotics. Moreover, according to some experts, people who consume such foods have high chances of developing cancer.
Besides, as these foods are new inventions, not much is known about their long-term effects on human beings. Many people prefer to stay away from these food products.
Many religious and cultural communities are against such foods because they see it as an unnatural way of producing food. Many people are also not comfortable with the idea of transferring animal genes into plants and vice versa. Also, this cross-pollination method can cause damage to other organisms that thrive in the shared environment.

解析
本文体裁属于论说文(argumentation)。全文分为三段,第一段先引人文章主题——转基因食品,接着分析了转基因食品支持者所提出的一些优点(various advantages):首先,转基因食品不需要很多杀虫剂(reduce the necessity of exposing genetically modified crops to harmful pesticides and insecticides);其次,转基因作物可以在气候条件不适宜的情况下生长(genetically engineered crops can be grown at places with unfavorable climatic conditions);再次,转基因食品不会迅速腐烂,因此保鲜时间较长(there is less fear of foods getting rotten quickly)。文章第二段引述了反对者的观点。他们认为转基因食品有三个主要危害。最大的威胁是转基因食物对人体的危害(have harmful effects on the human body);另外,转基因作物对所在环境中的其它植物来说是一种威胁(threaten the existence of other wild plants in the environment)。第三段是总结段,作者在总结前面观点的同时,表述了个人观点,作者认为只有当我们全面控制了其负面影响,人类才可以全面接受转基因作物(only when all the ill-effects of genetically modified food are dealt with moderation and discretion, can we fully embrace it)。
