Read the following texts from an article in which people talked about something concerning environmental protection. For questions 61 to 65, match the name of each person to one of the statements ( A to G) given below. Mark your answers on your ANSWER SHEET 1.
Jack Davis:
Historically, environmental problems are mainly caused by excessive consumption of natural resources and massive discharge of pollutants by developed countries in the course of industrialization. Even today, their consumption of natural resources and discharge of pollutants, both in terms of total volume and per capita share, far exceed those of developing countries. Furthermore, they have greater economic strength and more sophisticated technologies for environmental protection.
Jill Juma:
International cooperation should be based on respect for state sovereignty. All countries, large or small, rich or poor, strong or weak, are entitled to participate in international activities relating to environment and development on equal footing.
Tom Godwin:
At present, while paying attention to such global questions as climate change and biodiversity, we should give priority to addressing the problems of environmental pollution and degradation of ecological environment in developing countries such as soul erosion, desertification, diminished vegetation, droughts and floods. Solution to these problems will not only remove a serious threat to the environment and development of developing countries but also contribute significantly to the protection of global environment and economic growth.
Sam Langford:
To many developing countries, poverty and backwardness are root cause of environmental degradation. Therefore, it is essential to put environmental protection on the basis of equality and, under the prerequisite of strengthening North-South cooperation, to establish a new international economic order conductive to sustained economic development of all countries, developing countries in particular.
Richard Minifie:
The developed countries are obligated to make more contributions to international cooperation in two aspects. First, they should provide developing countries with new and additional financial resources to enable them to participate more effectively in international environmental cooperation or to compensate for their economic losses incurred in fulfilling their obligations. Second, developed countries should provide developing countries with the necessary environmental protection technologies on preferential and non-commercial terms.
Statements
[A] Though to protect the environment is a common task of all mankind, economically-developed nations should shoulder greater responsibility.
[B] When we take environmental problems, consideration should be given to various countries and the long-term interests of the whole world.
[C] All countries should assume equal responsibility in environmental problems.
[D] International environmental ~on should be conducted with full respect for the sovereignty of all states.
[E] Developed countries should help developing countries with environmental protection.
[F] Developing countries should be taken into full account because of their many problems.
[G] Economic development should go hand in hand with environmental protection.
Richard Minifie
