Student Debts
Online lenders that target college students, often offering them loans with illegally high interest, are booming as China’s financial sector expands.
" Students want to enjoy a high-quality lifestyle, so they may need money to buy devices or take extra courses," said Song Yongjun, head of Xiongdi Hezhong Technology, a company that promotes online lending Apps to college students.
However, while some students have used credit with no problems, others have fallen into heavy debts that can lead to tragedies.
According to a report, a student at Henan Agricultural University committed suicide after accumulating a debt of around 589,000 yuan that he borrowed from 14 different lending platforms using the stolen ID cards of 28 of his classmates.
"It’s quite easy. You only need to make an IOU," a freshman from Baoding University told the Global Times. At his college’s request, he and 10 of his classmates signed an agreement which allowed them to borrow money from a lending platform. He borrowed money several times " for some random needs like buying clothes", getting about 300 yuan each time, and repaid each loan within three months, paying around 10 yuan in interest.
Qiu, a junior student from Shandong University of Technology, told the Global Times that lending Apps are easy to find as ads have been posted everywhere on his campus since last year.
" The market of online lending platforms for college students started last year, when the lending market became more specialized, until small loan services appeared," Song said.
However, these new lending platforms have run into some legal issues.
" Some students use the identities of their classmates to borrow money, which is illegal," Song said.

How to Solve the Problem of Student Loans? Either to maintain a high-quality lifestyle or to meet some random needs, college students find themselves easily allured by small loan services which offer extremely easy access but illegally high interest. In my viewpoint, such loans aimed at students must be curbed. Under the pretext of helping university students to relieve their financial pressure, online small loan agencies lure unwary students into borrowing a big sum with illegally high interest which, if unpaid in due time, snowballs to a skyrocketing amount that can shatter one’s life. To avoid falling into this hideous trap, first of all, students should consult their seniors about getting a loan from these predatory lending agencies, or they may easily fall prey to an unsympathetic and even ruthless system. But more importantly, strict measures should be taken by our government to wipe out such agencies to safeguard the naive students. Sitting on the backs of the poor, these lenders are nothing but greedy vultures who put some students off their university dreams and even rob them of their lives. So allowing such loan services means risking a generation of youth who can easily be allured by the service and will soon find themselves hit by a mountain of debts. All in all, to promote social justice and protect students from this unnecessary evil, the government should propose income-based loan repayment with low interest for students, which allows students to repay their debts with a portion of their future earnings. The fewer students are slaves to debts, the sounder our nation becomes.
