As Internet and e-learning have been quite popular in institutes of higher learning, some people argue that students’ problem-solving ability will deteriorate, because they are adapted to "Google" the solution, instead of thinking of one by themselves. Do you agree or disagree with this statement "Internet is worsening the problem-solving ability of students"? Write an essay of about 400 words. You should supply an appropriate title for your essay.

The Internet Is Not the End of the Academia As what history has repeatedly shown to us, new technologies always stir controversies as they bring conveniences and benefits. The concern that the Internet will hinder the development of problem-solving ability by making things too easy has indeed a justifiable motive. However, upon careful consideration, it can be argued that such worry is unnecessary. As far as I see it, the Internet won’t worsen students’ problem-solving abilities. First of all, the Internet won’t cause the deterioration of students’ problem-solving ability because it is hardly omnipotent. The Internet provides a quicker and more efficient option of problem-solving for students, but it doesn’t apply to all problems. Google, for example, may be helpful when students are trying to search for background information or browse through studies by other people, but it may prove unhelpful when, say, a student attempts to tackle one particular issue in his experiment. Although Google has definitely made things easier for students, it does not complete the whole research process for them. In other words, even when students are solving a lot of problems by using Google, they will still have to deal with the unique, original and in most cases most significant ones by themselves. Hence worrying that the Internet will worsen students’ problem-solving ability is simply worrying too much. Secondly, the Internet actually trains students’ ability of problem-solving since it pushes them to be more original and innovative. Nowadays, there are very strict rules concerning cribbing in higher learning institutes. And although the Internet provides more sources for students than ever before, they have to use it with great caution because they will be accused of cribbing if their works resemble any of the works found on the Internet. It is then clear that the Internet in fact adds pressure for the students because study results of other people are available to all: not only students, but also teachers and supervisors. To accomplish their study, students will have to be able to skim through and screen different materials, and try to come up with more differentiated findings. In this manner, students will naturally sharpen their skills of sorting out information and developing their own ideas upon the materials concerned. As Newton so rightly puts it, "If I have been able to see further, it was only because I stood on the shoulders of a giant". The Internet is not the end of the academia, but rather a shoulder for us to stand on to see more and see further. The worry that the Internet may worsen students’ problem-solving ability is unnecessary.
