Man: Good morning and welcome to Promotion Everyday, the programme that speeds you up in your career development. Coming up later we have the successful examples or stars to keep you right on track. Today I’m talking to Karla DeCaprio. Karla, nice to meet you.
Woman: Thank you for having me here.
Man: Now, Karla, you are probably best known as a very famous Senior HR Manager in the top 500 fortune. Could you tell us what drew you to an HR career?
Woman: I was an athletic trainer in high school, which meant I spent a lot of time in the ER with injured athletes. I was very intrigued by the hospital room and the people who worked there. I began to wonder what kept people happy in that stressful sort of work environment. I found out, ultimately, that there was a field called hospital administration, and also, human resources, devoted to just this. It is a field focused on keeping a business and its employees happy.
Man: Inspiring your mind, ha. How did you start your human resources education?
Woman: I chose to pursue a human resources degree from the College of Business at Ohio State University. Afterwards, I also obtained a Master’s in Labour and Human Resources. I started my human resources career at Compuserv, an online connectivity company, where I primarily worked in staffing and campus recruiting. I grew the company from about 1,000 to 3,000 employees. After Compuserv acquired a small Internet company, I moved on to Spry as an HR manager. In 1996 I joined Microsoft, where I am today.
Man: What do you enjoy most about your job as a human resource professional? What are some challenges you face?
Woman; I enjoy watching the impact I can make in moving the business to a new place, and creating better offerings for the company. It can be a challenge because no two days are alike it’s not like a dentist’s office where everybody’s teeth look more or less the same.
Man: Interesting, like many business women, does your job allow for a healthy work-life balance?
Woman: I typically work 45 to 50 hours a week, not all of which is in the office. It really depends on the specific job. There are HR roles in Occupational Safety and Union Negotiations—in the airline industry, for instance—where the hours might be more erratic. In the tech industry, HR professionals tend to have pretty standard hours.
Man: Is it fairly easy to move around from one industry to another, for example, from high tech to financial or healthcare?
Woman: Yes, it is fairly easy to move around from sector to sector. But personally, software development has always interested me more than other areas.
Man: What skills are critical to having a successful HR career?
Woman: Business acumen—understanding the business and how it works. Systematical thinking—thinking about the system and organisation as a whole. People acumen— understanding why different people act the way they do.
Man: Any parting thoughts to someone planning on becoming a human resources professional?
Woman: Do informational interviews with people working in HR to understand all the different choices you have in this field. Study companies that do HR well, like General Electric and PepsiOo. This can be very helpful in understanding the type of impact a human resources professional can have. It’s also important to gain business expertise you will have to understand accounting and comprehend balance sheets, for example.
Man: What specific quality do you think is essential to the success of a HR manager?
Woman: Expercience and insight are very important, and the capability of study is all the more important.
Man: Karla DeCaprio, thank you very much!
Woman: Thank you!
选项

题干意为:Karla DeCaprio是从哪家公司开始她人力资源事业的?Karla DeCaprio列举了几个公司名称。最开始点出,即“I started my human resources career at Compuserv,an online connectivity company…”所以C项应是正确答案,第二份工作是在B项中的Spry,而A项Microsoft是她现在工作的公司。
