Nonverbal Signals
As humans, we communicate primarily through language. A speaker transmits his or her thoughts and feelings through words and expects the listener to obtain meaning from those words. However, nonverbal signals can be just as important in determining how the oral messages we relay are received and interpreted.Nonverbal signals can either reinforce or contradict the information we deliver with our spoken words. These signals include facial expressions, tone of voice, eye contact, body posture, and hand gestures. A person with a good understanding of nonverbal signals can ensure that the meaning of his or her words is clear.
M: So, there are all kinds of ways we can communicate meaning nonverbally.
Like the reading said, eye contact is one of these signals. Stating intently at
someone can make them feel that you’re angry or upset with them...but, if
you look away too often, it might be interpreted as boredom or lack of interest
on your part. And the way you Carry your body is another major nonverbal
signal. Traditionally, slumped-over posture indicates fatigue or a negative
attitude about what’s being discussed. And let’s not forget tone of voice. The
same words can have very different meanings depending on whether you
say them sarcastically, loudly, jokingly...Let’s come up with a quick example
to illustrate this idea of nonverbal signals. Say...you run into a friend at the
mall, and you ask them to have lunch with you. If your friend looks you in the
eye and smiles, and, uh...says "yes" in a strong tone of voice, it’s obvious
that they’re genuinely happy to have lunch with you. On the other hand...
maybe before they answer they look down at the floor, or kind of slump their
shoulders and then mutter something. No matter what words they use, you
can interpret that they don’t like the idea. In this case, it’s not really what they
say, but how they say it, right?

[Problem] The man is having difficulty with his accounting class. He keeps sleeping in and missing classes, not because he isn’t interested in the subject matter, but because he’s tired from [Solutions] waiting tables at his part-time job. The woman tries to give him some advice about his problem. [Topic] She says he should either quit his job, or switch to a later section so that he won’t miss the morning lectures, [Reasons] I think what he should do is switch to the later class time. Quitting the job is obviously not something he wants to do, because he clearly needs the extra income. And even though the. later class is supposedly full, I think the professor will probably make an exception for him and let him in the class. My professors have sometimes been able to do this for me, so I think it’s the best option in this case.
