Excerpt 1
Technology as a thief of creativity
The predominance of technology and smartphones in particular has led to many suggestions that creativity is being killed by our reliance on these tools. This isn’t a new thought—people were suggesting that technology was extinguishing creative impulses long ago.
Aldous Huxley wrote Brave New World back in 1932 where he suggested a future in which humans sated a constant desire for distraction through technology. Thoughts could be kept at bay because we would simply zap any boredom by distracting ourselves with our technological devices.
That’s often the crux of the argument—that we’re sacrificing original thoughts for keeping ourselves constantly entertained. It’s also argued that if we can find everything online somewhere, we don’t give ourselves room to problem-solve and innovate on our own.
Has the device in your hand become the technological distraction Aldous Huxley described, keeping thoughts at bay?
Scientific study tells us that we need time to daydream as daydreaming boosts our creativity. If we’re filling any possible down time with scrolling through devices, are we inhibiting that daydream time? Creativity is often referred to as a "use it or lose it" discipline. You might work in a creative job role, but even you could be strangling your creativity by being fastened to a device constantly.
Excerpt 2
Technology is enhancing creativity
Technology doesn’t only enable creativity, but nurtures it. Through platforms like YouTube, anyone with an Internet connection can hone their skills and be inspired by others, while meeting sites allow musicians, writers or filmmakers to get together and explore ideas and techniques.
In the past, there were barriers to creative success that technology has eroded. Thanks to the Internet, artists in tiny villages can reach a broad audience on the other side of the planet, and we in turn can experience creativity borne out of vastly different cultures, and thus enhancing our own. Forums and media platforms might create echo-chambers for some forms of thoughts, but they also represent safe discussion arenas for all topics and people, including creatives and would-be creatives, where exercises and conversations can stimulate original thoughts.
Far from killing creativity, technology allows for a greater proliferation of ideas and products, which means more inspiration. Eric Colson, the chief algorithms officer at Stitch Fix, has said that machines "expand the number of possibilities that a human designer can consider", reports Business of Fashion. Sites like Instagram do the same thing in the realm of photography: the vast number of images available means a limitless supply of inspiration for aspiring and professional photographers.

Technology Boosts Creativity and Innovation Technology has been evolving rapidly especially in the last few decades and now we have access to a wide spectrum of technological products such as smartphones. But when it comes to the impact of technological advancement on our creativity, there has not yet been a universal agreement. Some people contend that being obsessive with electronic products dramatically reduces the time for daydreaming that, according to scientific study, boosts our innovative ability. Others, however, claim that technology fosters a creative mind by providing various means for people of different cultures and backgrounds to exchange ideas. Personally I would vote for the latter view. The first point in favor of the technology-for-creativity argument is that technological development breaks the geographical barrier and thus enables students to learn new skills with professors through dis?tance learning. Generally, people who keep learning new skills are prone to come up with new ideas. More?over, technology provides an opportunity for students to build virtual models of their devices and programs so that they can better test their hypotheses. By contrast, in the past lack of technology thwarted students from putting their innovative ideas into tests thus inhibiting their originality. Social media is also encourag?ing creativity by engaging people of diverse cultures in online discussions and sharing of ideas. Those who are against the technology-for-creativity argument may suggest that technology extinguishes creative impulses by constantly distracting us from thinking deep. They also suggest that since the Internet provides us with access to a wide range of information, we do not exercise our minds as often as we used to. However, these criticisms are hardly fair because the so-called distraction actually provides us with an opportunity for relaxation so that we can be more focused. Besides, easier access to online information means that we can be able to compare our ideas with those of others and therefore come up with more innovative ones. Overall, I agree with the statement that technology boosts our creativity and innovation.
