Mr. Zhang:
Laba Festival is a traditional Chinese festival which signals the beginning of the spring festival celebrations. "Laba" literally means December 8 in the Chinese lunar Calendar.
Mr. Hnang:
People cat Laba rice during the laba festival. It is very simple to cook, although the ex- act recipe and ingredients vary from region to region. Food shops sell Laba rice, which is rice mixed with ingredients including kidney beans, peas, red beans, mung beans, millet, rice, Chinese sorghum, cowpea. People usually make the porridge by mixing this Laba rice with dried fruit such as Chinese dates, and chestnuts, then add sugar, and sometimes rose and sweetscented osmanthus.
Ms. Zhou:
There are many interesting stories about the origins of this festival but the most popular theory centers on Sakyamuni, the founder of Buddhism, who lived in India in the sixth century B. C.
Ms. Zhao:
On December 8, Sakymuni was so tired and hungry he fainted. Fortunately, he was saved by a passing shepherdess who gave him some wild fruit and porridge to eat. The porridge saved his life. He bathed in the river, sat under the tree, faced east, and lost himself in thought. It was then that he came to understand the true meaning of life. This enlightenment led him to become a Buddha and establish Buddhism.
Mr. Jiang:
This day of enlightenment, December 8, has been commemorated ever since. Every temple would make an offering of porridge, called Laba porridge, made from fragrant grain and dried fruit, to Buddha. Some emperors even gave porridge to officials as a reward. This custom became very popular. Ordinary people started to make porridge, giving it as an offering to Buddha, or sending it to neighbors and relatives as gifts.
