Shared bikes are now common on city streets in China but despite the widespread adoption and proliferation of shared bikes, constant criticism centers on the chaotic parking of these bicycles. How can we solve this problem? To address the problem of illegally parked and misplaced bikes, urgent measures need to be taken. First, bike-sharing operators need to tighten regulations on bike-parking. They should clarify in their app where riders can and can not park their bikes. Any parking in the prohibited areas triggers an alarm, and users receive text messages about their violation. Second, the traffic police need to step in to monitor and regulate bike parking, especially during rush hours. Third, the government can build more parking space for bikes. The shared bike plague is partly attributed to the fact that city planners did not take bike parking into consideration when designing road networks. Hopefully, China’s bike-sharing revolution will continue to transform the look and dynamics of its cities by formulating strict parking regulations, holding law enforcement accountable, and improving facilities to allow more inclusive services.
