The following data sufficiency problems consist of a question and two statements, labeled (1) and (2), in which certain data are given. You have to decide whether the data given in the statements are
sufficient
for answering the question. Using the data given in the statements
plus
your knowledge of mathematics and everyday facts (such as the number of days in July or the meaning of counterclockwise), you must indicate whether
A. Statement (1) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (2) alone is not sufficient.
B. Statement (2) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (1) alone is not sufficient.
C. BOTH statements TOGETHER are sufficient, but NEITHER statement ALONE is sufficient.
D. EACH statement ALONE is sufficient.
E. Statements (1) and (2) TOGETHER are NOT sufficient.
If 8 skiers raced down a course multiple times in one day, and each skier used a different pair of skis on each run, what is the total number of different skis used by the 8 skiers during the day?
(1) No skier shared any skis with any other skier.
(2) Each skier made exactly 12 runs during the day.
选项
答案
C
解析
alone is insufficient because it doesn’t say how many times each skier raced the course. (2) alone is insufficient because it does not exclude the possibility of sharing; there could have been 12 pairs of skis shared among the 8 skiers, or there could have been a total of 12×8=96 skis, or any number in between. If the statements are combined, we see that the number has to be 12×8=96 skis.
