Walter Johannes Damrosch, younger son of Leopold, was born in Breslau, Germany, in 1862. He came to American with his father and became a citizen. He studied music with his father and with the famous conductor Hans Ben Bulow. When Leopold died in 1885, his son Walter succeeded him as conductor of the Oratorio society and the symphony Society, and finished the season as conductor at the Metropolitan Opera.
