答案 1 There are some people who believe that in many areas of modern life, people are faced with range of options that are simply confusing. I agree with this idea and there are two main reasons I will discuss in this essay. Firstly, let’s look at the range of products available in any given market. Each domestic market has its own products available to the consumers, when you then include globalisation and the international products be added to the mix the choice just becomes impossible. An example of this is coffee. The last time I went to buy coffee it took me nearly 5 minutes just to see what types they had: everything from Expresso to cappuccino, instant to beans: the quantity of choices were overwhelming. Add the different countries that were offering the same product and this just multiplies. The second reason is the way that society now purchases things. Online shopping has grown exponentially, first with ’ shops’ like eBay, then with platforms like Amazon and TaoBao. Here the issue isn’t the number of products you can buy, but the number of shops you can buy them from. Any search for even the most mundane of products, like coffee, I can buy from over 100 different places, and that’s simply on TaoBao. With Amazon, I’d probably get 100 more. In conclusion then, because of the reasons I stated above, I truly believe that our choices have now become too saturated and it’s nigh on impossible to select anything from the ocean of available options. (253 words) 2 These days we live in a world of nearly limitless choices for even the most mundane of decisions: there is a reason, after all, that this era is called ’ the internet of things’ . I am convinced that the choices available in the modern era are far too numerous. In the past, a person’s choices were largely restricted. Unless individuals were born to extremely wealthy parents it was likely that, barring some very rare exceptions, they ate the same food every day, lived in the same place their entire life, and performed the same job as their father or mother. While this seems limited by today’s standards, it could be argued that people were more satisfied with their lives as a result, since they had few choices from the beginning, and thus less to regret when looking back on the choices they made. On the other hand, we are practically assaulted with choices from an early age in the modern era. From our youth we are informed that we can do anything we put our minds to, and the advertisements on television and the Internet seem to confirm this notion. It is no small wonder, then, that many people feel frustration and pressure when trying to choose their major in college, or pondering the materialistic nature of modern society, as what was considered enough to fill the want of our hearts yesterday is replaced with the most updated model today. This has even been confirmed by psychological experiments that have been conducted in less developed countries, where shoppers at a supermarket were given a varied number of product choices. Those who had fewer choices were more likely to be content with what they bought than shoppers who had an abundance of choices. These findings tend to reveal a fairly convincing reason for much of the unhappiness of the developed world. In brief, I believe that nowadays we have more choices than we can cope with. With an endless stream of options given to us by the online world, it is hard to feel content with any choice we make, when there are so many others that could have been made. (359 words)
