Recently, some NGOs (non-governmental organizations) which fight for animal rights are protesting against the idea that animals are kept as pets in a household. But in many parts of the world, especially in the western societies, many families keep animals as pets, such as dogs, cats, parrots and guinea pigs. Do you agree or disagree that we keep animals as pets? Write an essay of about 400 words. You should supply an appropriate title for your essay.

Love Me; Love My Dog It is alleged that some 5,000 years ago in ancient Egypt wild cats were domesticated and the practice of keeping animals as pets has been continuous ever since then. The history of pets is nearly as old as our human civilization While I acknowledge the concerns about animal torture and maltreatment, I believe we could keep animals as pets. First of all, keeping pets is beneficial to shape the owners’ characteristics and temperament. To take good care of pets, we must be responsible, caring, compassionate and considerate. Take keeping a dog in the house for example. It is unlike keeping a piece of furniture, still and motionless. Rather, the dog runs around, barks, wags its tail and sometimes gets sick. It urges you to interact with it and put its well-being into consideration. Thus, the emotional bond between you and the pet is strengthened every time you feed it, play with it and feel upset about its illness. A pet is now one important family member, which shapes your personality and teaches you how to become a better person. The case is ever more so when a kid is around. Asking a kid to look after a pet is a meaningful character-building process, which will benefit the child for a life time. Moreover, if animals are kept as pets, it is in their best interests. Darwin’s famous doctrine "survival of the fittest" is the jungle law in the wild. If some of the animals are left in the field, the chance for their survival will be hanging by a thread. Living in a household, the pets receive a safe shelter, constant supply of food and thoughtful care All of these have earned them a better living condition than their wild counterparts. As we know, some animals are inherently weak, such as rabbits. Once set free, they might be reduced to the prey of ferocious wolves. If we do care about them, we’d better take the control and keep them as pets. Whilst I am in favor of keeping animals as pets, I also urge those future pet owners to think twice before making a decision. No one should take a pet, unless he is willing to commit his time, money and efforts to it. In conclusion, when people are willing to make a commitment, they should be allowed to adopt an animal as a pet. And we can and we will keep saying "love me; love my dog".
