For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write an essay based on the picture below. You should start your essay with a brief description of the picture and then discuss what qualities an employer should look for in job applicants. You should give sound arguments to support your views and write at least 150 words but no more than 200 words.

Are Degrees More Important than Abilities? In the cartoon, an employer expresses his pity to the young interviewee with a master’s degree. Although the graduate has an impressive resume, he fails the interview because his competitors are all Ph. D. s. The picture mirrors that nowadays interviewers place greater emphasis upon education background. However, I assume the ability of job applicants should gain more attention. There are three main reasons to support this view. First and foremost, diploma is merely a measure of one’s ability. To put it another way, the cart should not be put before the horse. Besides, in the sole pursuit of employees with high-level education, companies are likely to miss really talented people who may quit school because of financial difficulties or other reasons. For example, Steven Jobs, a real innovator, did not finish his college but started Apple; Bill Gates, one of the richest men on earth, dropped out too. One’s talents cannot be only gauged by the formal schooling. Finally, most of the companies do not specialize in the cutting-edge science, where doctors could be a total waste. In conclusion, I believe candidates should not be evaluated only by their academic degree and the recruiters are supposed to appreciate the talents and abilities more.
