John: If I understand you correctly, Mr. David, you were driving well within the speed limit when you were stopped by the Police.
David: Yes. I always keep to the limit in Downside Road because there’s a school slap on the comer of the first turning and I wouldn’t want to run the risk of hitting one of the kids, right?
John: But Mr. David, the Police stopped you at 11 p.m. You’re surely not suggesting that children of any age would be likely to be leaving school at such a ’late hour. I cannot find that your assertion provides any conclusive proof that you were driving within the limit.
David: Proof?. Well, it’s not exactly proof I grant you, but it sort of backs me up, if you know what I mean.
John: I’m afraid I do not know what you mean.
David: Well, I go by the speedometer, don’t I? That’s what a speedometer’s for, isn’t it? It tells you how fast you’re going. I mean a machine can’t lie, can it?
John: "Machines" as you call them are not necessary infallible guides, Mr. David. They sometimes go wrong. In any case according to the Police testimony you were driving at more than sixty miles an hour in such a manner as to cause a danger to the public. David: Very funny, sir. Still, the steering wheel has been playing up a bit lately, I’ll admit that. I ’said to thc wife only the other day I’d better have it checked, but she said put it off till we went on holiday, so...
John: Quite so, Mr. David. Now, I understand that when the Police stopped you, you refused to take a breathalyzer test. Why was that?
David: Well, I hadn’t been drinking, had I? Half a lager and lime at The Feathers--you must be joking.
John: It is not my habit to make jokes in court, Mr. David, and the report I have here shows that subsequent tests indicated that you had taken considerably more than a lager and lime.
David: You don’t want to take any notice of that, sir. They’re just trying to put it over on me -- me and all the others they stop when they’ve nothing better to do. If you ask me the Police ought to be protecting innocent people from vandals and muggers, instead of picking on innocent drivers...
John: Kindly lower your voice, Mr. David. This is a court of law not a theatrical presentation. Now, if you would care to listen to this report, I will read it out to you...
