The Profits of Labour At present the mentality of some people is to despise labour and to worship idleness. They admire those rich people who pass their time in leisure and ease; they look down upon those poor persons who must work hard to support themselves. The desire o{ these people is to obtain maximum pay with mini mum work. How many of them are parasites who live on others’ hard labour! How few take pleasure in labouring for labour’s sake! If we do not labour, we shall lose the living force nature has endowed us. One thing we should know is that the labour gives a man the proud spirit of independence. The worker earns his keep by honest labour, and can look the world in the face, because he owes no man anything. And while he supports himself and his family with his own labour, he knows he is contributing useful goods or services to the whole community. Therefore, every—such as perseverance, application, punctuality, thoroughness, attention to de tails, and the habit of industry. These virtues may be humdrum and commonplace; but many a promising life has come to nothing for lack of them. And no idler can acquire them.
