Bad Boy is Olivia Goldsmith’s debut novel. The First Wives Club touched a nerve with women around the world when it was published in 1991 and was later made into a highly successful movie starring Diane Keaton, Goldie Hawn and Bette Middler. Since then her funny, on-target social commentary has been continued seen in a series of novels. But fans of the writer are set to be slightly disappointed with her latest offering, Bad Boy. The novel is basically about modern-day women’s conflicting attitudes towards men as friends versus lovers.
It follows the story of journalist Tracie Higgins and her best friend Joe Delano who is sensitive, funny and nice, but couldn’t get a date to save his life. After several failed relationships he asks for Tracie’s help and(17)she sets about turning Joe from Mr. Nice Guy into a Bad Boy. And suddenly Joe is much in demand by the women he meets(Joe and Tracie begins to feel a bit jealous of the attention he is receiving and starts to look at Joe in a new light herself.
The premise and resolution of the story are all fairly predictable— the book is, after all, simply a romantic comedy. Its strength lies in Goldsmith’s ability to create clever dialogue and over the top characters, while its weakness is that we expect slightly more than this from the popular author.(18)A good, light read if you don’t want anything too demanding.
