答案 Education Does Promote Equality "All men are created equal. " Though this concept seems deeply rooted in people’s mind, there is a long way to go if we want this dream to come true. Equality, the rights that every citizen, regardless of family background, gender, or nationality can enjoy, would be more than a slogan that we chant if we value education. That is because education is the way to cultivate and nurture the labor force needed by economic and social development and it can to a large extent bridge the gap between different social groups. Firstly, education reduce income disparities that often result from technological change and globalization. Technological change has given an advantage to those who are good at working with computers and information technology. And globalization has moved low-skilled jobs out of advanced economies, leaving workers who previously held these jobs redundant. Even in countries to which these jobs relocate, the advantage goes to the more skilled workers. Meanwhile, however, people from less advantaged family backgrounds may find it difficult to have access to IT training without education. In this sense, education means the same job opportunities for people from different family backgrounds. As a result, education helps narrow the income gap. Secondly, education contributes to gender equality. In the old days when most women could not get educated, they were basically confined at home. Their only job was to do housework. Nowadays, however, thanks to modern educational system, women have more choices in the job market. On the one hand, education provides them the knowledge and skills needed to operate the machines that take charge of most monotonous and labor-intensive work. So relatively low physical strength is not an obstacle that prevents them from choosing jobs. On the other hand, women can get the same access to tertiary education as men can do, which means that they can compete for the same jobs with their male counterparts. Owing to education, women are no longer second-class citizens or even invisible in the job market. As Nelson Mandela says, "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world. " Education is the key to reducing poverty, to eliminating gender inequality, and to fostering peace. And in a knowledge economy, education is the most critical investment we can make.
