答案
Should Universities Allow Students to Have More Optional Courses? Currently, there are both compulsory courses and optional courses in my university. And the ratio of the number of compulsory courses (必修课) to that of the optional courses available is about 6:1. Generally, students in the first and second years of college studies are allowed no opportunity of choosing optional courses. Only when they begin their third or fourth year of studies can they be able to choose optional courses in their chosen field of study. It is believed that compulsory courses are designed to lay a solid foundation for their college study, especially in their chosen area of concentration. And optional courses, on the other hand, are developed to give students opportunities of furthering their studies within a give scope. Personally, I believe that the university should allow students to have more optional courses for the mason that this will not only enhance the students’ sense of responsibility for their studies but also give them more alternatives guiding them towards their real interests in the academia. In the current system, students are predominantly learning according to the university’s arrangement, which, if remained unchanged, might result in a misleading conception that learning is not one’s own responsibility. Also, the existing pool of optional courses might not satisfy the students’ need for furthering their education in the area of their interests. Thus, I think it is necessary for the university to consider allowing students to have more optional courses.
