W: So Tom, what do you think about children today having mobile phones?
M: Mobile phones? Well, I think it could be a good thing. I mean for safety reasons.
W: Really?
M: Yes, if I were a parent, I think I would feel safer knowing that my child had a mobile phone and I could get in touch with him whenever I need to, and if something happens like an emergency, then he will be able to use the mobile phone.
W: It sounds reasonable. But I would argue that it is quite dangerous actually.
M: That is an interesting point. How would you think it will be dangerous?
W: Because children don’t really have the best attention spans anyway and often they could, for example, walk into the road whilst they are talking on their mobile phones and generally pay no attention. What if there were some cars just at that moment? So I don’t think it is very safe for them.
M: Well, that’s a good point, but that could also teach them responsibility as well.(8)If mobile phones are unsafe, bicycles could be unsafe and toys could be unsafe, but that’s all part of growing up and I think that if you teach them responsibility, it shouldn’t be a big problem.
W: But I think fewer children these days play on bikes than they used to. I think children are more dependent upon technology and I see that as a definite negative thing because children don’t play out as they used to. They just stay in and watch TV and play computer games.
M: True, true. I suppose so, but you know technology is a necessity in our lives and in the future. If we want them to become competent in using technology and taking advantage of technology, then I think it would be a good way to start.
W: Don’t you think they are really expensive though?
M: Oh yeah, they are. A new mobile phone will cost at least several thousand. Do you think it is really worth it?
W: Not really. It is much better to spend money on more meaningful things, like education or even entertainment.
M: I can’t agree more.
W: If I were a parent, I would not want my child to phone people too often because it would cost so much money.
M: Well, you could be right about that.(10-1)They do cost a lot of money.

M: For sure.
