Qualities of a Leader There must be dozens of qualities one should have in order to be an effective and inspiring leader, such as honesty, kindness and good image. These qualities, of course, are important in helping a leader be popular with people. But these alone cannot make up a good leader. For my part, a good leader should be above all firm, fair and foresighted. Take a principal of a school, one of our first encounters with a figure of authority, for example. When a principal announces a rule, you must understand that he or she means it. If a rule requires all students to be in their seats when the bell rings, the rule must be enforced. If students are out of seats when the bell rings, they should be punished. If a rule requires that students not wear hats in school, the rule must be enforced. A principal must first of all be firm. He or she must have the resolution to make decisions and see to that they be carried out. A leader’s firmness and resolution must be first accepted and supported by the greatest number of people before his measures and policies can any effective. In order to do that, he must always be fair. When a principal enforces a rule, you must understand that he or she will treat everyone equal. If I got caught eating at my desk, I must receive the same punishment that my classmate got when she got caught eating at her desk. If a sophomore is late for school, he or she must receive the same punishment that a senior would. A principal must be fair. When a principal establishes a rule. you must understand that he or she has a good reason for it. If a rule requires that students must participate in extracurricular sports, you should understand that the principal knows that a strong body as well as a strong will help us in the future. If a rule requires that students do two hours of volunteer work in the community each week, you should understand that the principal knows that close involvement in the community builds strong character. A principal must be foresighted. Such ability to see ahead of times and other people can be charming to the students in the long run and blow courage into their hearts in overcoming whatever difficulties in their later life. A principal’s example is highly representative. Whatever organizations one runs, from a Student Union to a huge business or a country, the leader must possess the three leadership qualities discussed above—resolution, sense of justice and foresighted ness. If chance were offered me, I would model my own abilities on the ones I observed in school. I hope I can be as firm, fair, and foresighted as that principal.
