答案 Water Shortage Water is the foundation of human existence. Without water, we cannot live. On the average, a person drinks about two quarts (夸脱，液体容量单位，约等于1. 4升) a day, and we drink more in summer. In addition, we must have water to wash our food, clothing, furniture, and so on. Water is perhaps the most useful substance in our world. Apart from cleaning and cooking, it makes grass grow, brings forth flowers with their gay colors, and ripens fruit-trees and corn. When water is turned into steam, it supplies the force which sets our machinery in motion. People usually think that water is inexhaustible (无穷尽的；用不完的). On our earth we have so many rivers and lakes, small or large. We can get fresh water from wells and we can get rain water from the sky. But in fact our world is very short of water. The world’s population is doubling every 35 years. People all over the world need too much water. On the other hand, our industries also need too much water and the waste of the industries is even polluting our limited sources of fresh water. I think now it is time for us to do something to ease the global water shortage. As we know, over 85% of the earth’s entire fresh water is found in the polar ice (地极的冰). If we could find a way of carrying this ice to other parts of the world, it would solve all our water problems.
