New York is a great city for shopping. Its shops (or stores as they say in the USA) sell everything. In fact, New York’s stores are a very important tourist attraction—like the Statue of Liberty and the Empire State Building but it is possible to enjoy them without spending a cent. The department stores and the specialist stores which sell food and other things from all over the world are exciting and interesting just to look at. Like all big cities, different parts of New York have different kinds of stores. Uptown Manhattan is really expensive—if you want to buy a painting by Picasso, go there. Midtown Manhattan also has some very expensive department stores, selling clothes and jewellery to rich New Yorkers. In Downtown Manhattan—Greenwich Village, Soho, Little Italy—you can find small clothes stores, bookstores and " specialist" stores—or example a shop which only sells socks, or one with a hundred kinds of tea!
The best time to go shopping is early in the morning in the week. On Saturday and Sunday the stores are full of people. Most stores only close on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. On all the other days, the big stores are open from 10:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. The Downtown stores close later—between 8:00 p.m. and midnight. Remember, if you visit New York, take your credit cards!
Only the big stores are open on Sunday. ()
