T-Mart’s Efforts to Protect Environment
By Janet Lee
Madison, WI(March 15)- Some large corporations have a vested interest in being socially responsible to the environment. Last Thursday, T-Mart donated $20 million to one of the environmental organizations. The funding will be used to protect the rain forest in Africa. Mr. Thomas Campbell, C.E.O of T-Mart, said they made the donation to support Africa Wildlife Center’s vital work and also to focus attention on the rain forest and wildlife in it.
According to Mr. Campbell, he learned of the problem from a colleague who attended a lecture by Oscar Green, a biologist at the Wildlife Center. Mr. Campbell also heard that the Wildlife Center coordinates with local and state officials to track many endangered animals due to forest degradation, protect their population, and reduce rain forest destruction.
After meeting with Dr. Green, Mr. Campbell encouraged T-Mart’s marketing department to come up with a way of providing ongoing support to the Wildlife Center. As a result, T-Mart decided to give benefits those corporations that use eco-labeling on their products and display their products in the designated area near the entrance to receive more attention from customers who are environmentally conscious. "We aim to give our customers a greater understanding of the importance of rain forest and wildlife," said Mr. Campbell.
Many local business owners, including Mr. Campbell attended Dr. Green’s presentation yesterday at the Wildlife Center. Dr. Green thanked Mr. Campbell and said that a single individual person like Mr. Campbell who acknowledges this concern should try to lead a life in which everything he does is to better the environment. Other people will follow his lead, and it will impact the rest of society’s responsibility for the Earth.
