E First of all, we’d like to know something about you, so I’m going to ask some questions about yourselves. E How do you like the weather in Beijing? A I’m studying at a university in Beijing, and I have been here for three years. Actually I like the weather in Beijing except for its sandstorms. It’s always sunny in Beijing, and I like sunny days very much because it makes me happy. My hometown is in the South of China, and is always rainy which is really annoying. I just feel sleepy and it’s not convenient to go out in such weather. So, comparing with that of my hometown, I like Beijing’s sunny days and dry weather. I don’t have chilblains in the winter. Certainly it’s annoying when the sandstorms arrive, which bring much inconvenience and trouble to my daily life and study. Generally speaking, I like the weather in Beijing in spite of its sandstorms. E People say the climate is becoming warmer. Do you agree? (Why do you think so?) A Yes, I agree with this point of view. In fact, Beijing is now warmer and warmer with each passing year. I experienced this change during my campus life. Beijing’s summer is hotter and hotter, and I hate it. We can’t sleep at night because of the heat. The factories and motor vehicles in big cities are giving off a great deal of gases. As a result, the level of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere reaches a new high. For this reason, the average temperature of the world is increasing. E What do you think we can do to prevent the climate from becoming worse? A Today, some scientists believe human beings are changing the climate. How can that be? Over the past few centuries, people have been burning more amounts of fuels such as wood, coal, oil, natural gas and gasoline. The gases formed by the burning, such as carbon dioxide, are building up in the atmosphere. They act like a greenhouse. So, reducing the use of fossil fuels would considerably reduce the amount of carbon dioxide produced, as well as reducing the levels of the pollutants which cause acid rain. This can be achieved by either using less energy altogether, or using alternative energy sources. You can help save energy in lots of ways: turn off lights when you leave a room; if you have a car, don’t use it for short journeys. Every country is responsible for the supervision of greenhouse gases. E Is the climate an important consideration when you look for a place to live and work? B Yes, climate is one of the most important considerations when I look for a place to live and work. Before deciding on a university I contemplated this question for a long time. Finally, I decided to work and live in Beijing. It’s always sunny and I love sunny days. Because of the dry weather, it is cool in summer and warm in winter than other cities such as Shanghai and Shenzhen. In winter, the temperature indoor is agreeable because there are caliducts in every room. E Do changes in weather affect human emotions? B As far as I am concerned, the weather affects human emotions. For example, I’m very happy on sunny days. If the weather is very good, I like to go out or go shopping with my friends. If it’s cloudy or rainy, I would be in no mood for everything. I’d stay at home and sleep. Science has proven that weather can affect human emotions. The air pressure of cloudy or rainy day is higher than that of sunny days. People can feel the change of air pressure, and higher air pressure will make people uncomfortable, which can be seen in their emotions.
