Making decisions in general - What are some decisions that most people need to make these days? At different stages of life, people have different decisions to make. For students, they are faced by such questions as what school to attend and which subject to take. As for graduates, they may have to think about what kind of company they would like to join, and what kind of career they should pursue. When we grow older, we need to decide which city to live, who to marry, and when to have children etc. - Who do people think usually give the best advice in your culture? In my country, parents may be the authority to turn to when we face a critical decision. We believe that they have more experiences in life and work and they always think of the best for us. However, there is generation gap here. Our parents may think out of their point of view, which is out of date, so that sometimes the advice may not be suitable for us. Therefore, parents should not be the only source we seek for help. We could turn to our friends, spouses, teachers, or experts to get advice from different perspectives. - What disadvantages are there when other people give you advice, when you have to make decision? Well, I hold that advice could just be a reference, because people give you advice based on their individual experience which might not apply to your situation. If you go to only one person for advice, he or she may be bias towards the issue. If you consult more people, you may get extremely different ideas on the same matter and end up feeling more confused. What’s worse, if the result comes out ugly you may tend to blame the persons who had given you advice before, even though they were not the real decision maker and should not bear the responsibility. Age and decisions - What are the important things that a teenager has to make decisions about? For a teenager, I would say the two most important things are study and travel. Knowledge gained from study and experience accumulated from travel could help one grow up. So young people should devote themselves to these two things and find out what they like and what they like doing in life, especially with choosing majors. My experience told me that what you study shapes who you are. A young man studies literature would have higher chances to become a writer than another who studies chemistry. So it’s important to make a careful decision on it while you’re young. So it is true with travel. The places you go to decide who you will meet in life. If Cinderella doesn’t show up in the ball she wouldn’t meet the Prince. So deciding where to go is important for young people too. - How can your age make a difference to the way you approach decision making? When I was in my teenage days, I relied on my intuition on decision making, for instance, shopping for clothes or ordering dinner. Life was simple and easier then and decisions could be made largely based on my personal preference. As I walked in adulthood, more and more critical decisions surrounded me, such as career or spouse choice, that’s when I learned to introduce more sensible approaches in decision making, such as the "SWOT" tool, which means strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. It could indeed help me analysing the good and bad about a future company. And life experiences helps, too. The older I grow, the more experiences in the past I can make reference to when dealing with future decisions. - How are the kinds of decisions people make today different to life 50 years ago? Why? As we know, China now is so different from 50 years ago when people didn’t have to worry about career, housing and pension. Now the young generation makes all kinds of decisions for the above-mentioned matters. Take career for example. Our parent’s generation had jobs assigned to them after they left school while young people nowadays prefer to follow their interests and passion in job hunting. So we must take the initiative to decide which vocational training course to take, whether to take the civil servants qualification exam, or whether joining an internet company etc. The older generation half a century ago lived in a relatively much smaller size economy where limited job choices were available, whereas we live in a complicated and highly specialised employment market Each step we make in our career path bears much higher stake than it used to be. Any tiny mistake in our decisions may result in unemployment or bankrupt against the backdrop of an unstable economic environment.
