Could someone be swallowed by a whale and live? In 1891, a young English sailor named James Bartley was, and he did.
Bartley was a crew member on the whaling ship Star of the East. As his boat whaling ship a whale, the animal lashed out with its tail. The whale’s blow lifted the boat into the air and capsized it. Sailors in another boat captured the whale, and the overturned boat was turned upright, but Bartley was missing.
The next morning, as sailors were cutting up the dead whale, they noticed a movement in its stomach. When it was opened, Bartley was found inside it! He was unconscious, and his face, neck, and hands had been bleached white by the whale’s stomach juices. Other than that, he seemed unhurt.
Later, when Bartley recovered, he described his experience. He had been aware of being in the water. Then he was in darkness, sliding along a slimy passageway. The heat was so great that it made him pass out. When he woke, he was back on board the ship!
