Millennials were【B1】______to be the next golden ticket for retailers. A 70 million consumers【B2】______between the ages of 18 and 34, this was the first generation of Americans to grow up with cell phones and the Web. Marketers could【B3】______them in numerous ways—tweets, Facebook pages—that were【B4】______when their boomer parents started out. " Marketers thought, ’ Here come the Millennials, we’re going to have an awesome time selling to them,’" says Max Lenderman, a director at ad agency Crispin Porter & Bogusky. "They were waiting for a【B5】______. Then comes the financial crisis, and all of a sudden the door has almost【B6】______in their face. "
No group was hit harder by the Great Recession than the Millennials. Their careers are【B7】______. They hold record levels of education debt. And an estimated 24 percent have had to move back home with parents at least once.
That’s bad news for the movie studios, clothing retailers, and home improvement chains that had hoped for better. Williams-Sonoma and Home Depot thrive on household formation— economist【B8】______for marrying, having kids, and buying a home—but many cash-strapped Gen Y-ers have put those modern rites of passage【B9】______hold. Twenty percent of 18-to 34-year-old respondents in a recent Pew survey said they had【B10】______marriage for financial reasons, while 22 percent put【B11】______having a baby for similar reasons.
【B12】______this generation was always going to be a challenge.【B13】______into the Web’s endless information and choices, Millennials are pickier and【B14】______brand loyal than their parents.【B15】______before the recession they craved authentic products—for example, buying shoes from Toms Shoes, which donates a pair to poor children for every one it sells. The Millennial【B16】______is "buy less and do more," says David Maddocks. "Boomers were about【B17】______, whereas this generation is about having enough. " The【B18】______of the recession could make Gen Y even less acquisitive.
Gen Y’s【B19】______could eventually hurt the luxury market, too, says Pam Danziger, president of research firm Unity Marketing. She says a 25-year-old who shops at Gap typically trades up to Nordstrom(JWN), Saks(SKS), and perhaps Tiffany(TIF)decades later. But today, Danziger says, " We have a group of people who are seeking only to live within their【B20】______. "
【B13】
选项
A、Indulged
B、Penetrated
C、Plugged
D、Lost
答案
C
解析
[A]Indulged一词往往指“沉溺,放纵”,使用的结构往往是sb.be indulged insth.。句法上正确,但是介词搭配有问题,因此可以排除。[B]Penetrated意思是“渗透,刺入”。可以与介词into搭配,例如:Explorers penetrated deep into unknown regions. Yon can plug yourself into the national computer network.你可以接通全国计算机网络。稍加变化,这个短语可变成sb.be plugged into sth.,因此Plugged一词填在空格处句法上是正确的,同样意思上也是合理的,为正确答案。[D]选项可以构成短语sb.be lost in sth.,意思是“某人迷失在……之中”,语法上正确,但是句意上有问题,“年轻人因为迷失在海量的信息中而变得更加挑剔”,不合逻辑,因此也是错误答案。
