Why Are There More Nuclear Families in China Today? The scenes where senior citizens live together with their children and grandchildren are getting fewer and fewer. Unlike traditional extended families, there are more nuclear families nowadays. Why is this the case? Why elderly Chinese parents choose to live apart from their children? First and foremost, the elders’ outlook on life is changing. In the past, they may suppose that they raise children for their old age. Nowadays, however, with a higher literacy rate, old people are getting more open-minded, regarding their children as separate individuals. They choose not to get involved in their children’s life. Some of them may choose to live apart from their children to avoid the possible conflicts brought by generation gap. More importantly, these days it is quite easy for senior citizens to support themselves with pensions and they can easily have fun by themselves. They can play chess, drink tea, do Taichi, and take a stroll at any park or in the village. In this case, more old people choose not to live with their children but to enjoy their own time. Secondly, the development of medical care and nursing homes make it possible for old people to live apart from children without the worry of getting no care. Today’s elder parents can get medical service much faster than their counterpart in old days. That means they do not have to move into their children’s house to be attended. They can call 120 themselves and ambulances will arrive as soon as possible. Even in some remote area, it is not difficult to find a clinic these days. Moreover, the number of nursing homes is increasing day by day. Some old people prefer to live there with their peers rather than live with their own children. In the nursing homes, they can hang out with people of the same age, and they are taken care of by professional nurses. To some extent, it might be safer for old people to live in nursing homes where they hardly get alone. Thirdly, various means of transport today allow parents to meet their children easily. In days gone by, it might take several days or even several months on the way to travel from one place to another. But today, high speed railway and airplane greatly cut down on travel time. Parents now will never get concerned that if they live separate from their children, they will hardly see their children. Nowadays, when parents or children have spare time, they can easily get to each other’s home. By and large, today’s parents are generally more open-minded than their counterparts before. For them, children are more independent individuals than their supporters in the old age. And some elders are more independent with pensions and can have fun themselves. Moreover, medical care system and convenient means of transport nowadays allow old people to choose any lifestyle they want. With all these factors taken into consideration, it is no wonder there are more nuclear families today.
