Was the curse of the mummy real? Though the death of Lord Carnarvon seemed mysterious, it was probably more the 【C1】 res______of bad hygiene than a curse, says Dr. Robert Prichard, a medical examiner for the state of California.
"His mosquito bite became 【C2】 ______(infect)from a dirty shaving razor and he developed sepsis, or blood poisoning, " Dr. Prichard believes.
As for the deaths of the others involved in the opening of King Tutankhamen’ s tomb, there is 【C3】 no______ mysterious there either, researchers say. The British Medical Journal looked at all the evidence concerning forty-four of the people who were associated with the excavation of King Tutankhamen’ s tomb. They concluded that, 【C4】 ______ (statistical), no more of those people died than any other population sample.
Still, research in microbiology suggests that, 【C5】 al______there is no mummy’ s curse, there may be real health dangers associated with opening tombs like those in the Valley of the Kings. The old tombs were sealed so tightly that the insides may have become anaerobic, meaning that air could not get inside. When this happens, certain bacteria grow in the oxygen-free environment that could not ordinarily survive, and 【C6】 wh______ can be harmful if inhaled. Other types of organisms like molds and fungi could also be 【C7】 pre______, and some of them can cause serious health problems. For example, the fungus Aspergillus niger can survive in tombs for thousands of years, and can cause fever and body rashes when inhaled. For these reasons, modem archaeologists, 【C8】 ______(like)those in the 1920s, wear protective filter masks and gloves when entering a tomb for the first time.
Finally, it has been suggested that the punitive inscription engraved on the entrance to King Tutankhamun ’ s tomb was an invention of a young British newspaper reporter 【C9】 ______ the name of Doyle, later known as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The real inscription, it is reported, is far less concerned with inflicting punishment 【C10】 ______ with protecting the dead.
【C3】
选项
答案
nothing
解析
该句的意思是“研究人员说,这也没有什么神秘的。”这里指的是前面的开墓而死亡的例子。因为后面用科学解释了这个想象,所以空处应该是否定含义。故填nothing。
