According to the talk, the critical period hypothesis states that there is a critical period for language acquisition in first language acquisition. This period is biologically determined. In a specific manner, it is believed that languages could be more easily acquired during a period of one’s life and it will become very difficult for one to acquire the languages when one passes this period. This period is said to be somewhat under 12 and 13 years and over 6 and 7. Two pieces of evidence are cited in the talk: one is Genie and the other is Helen Keller. Genie was an American girl. She was locked in a room by her father at about 2 years old and had nobody to talk to since then. When she was discovered, she was about 13 years old. Although linguists had tried to teach her languages, she only knew a limited vocabulary and could not grasp any language The reason for this is said to be that she had already passed the critical period. The other example is Helen Keller. She was born blind and deaf and did not learn to talk until she was 7 years old. Unlike Genie, she grasped languages, which was believed to be because she was still under the critical period of acquiring languages when she started to learn languages.
