答案 Changes in People’s Diet The figures in the table indicate that significant changes took place in the diet of the Chinese people from 1980 to 2000. The consumption of grain decreased gradually from 49% to 45% while that of milk and meat showed a steady increase from 10% and 17% to 13% and 21% respectively. Fruit and vegetables consumption declined from 24% to 21%. Obviously, there is a shift away from the traditional grain-base diet to one containing more protein and high-energy foodstuffs in the twenty years. There are several reasons for these changes. Firstly, the common people now can afford to buy food of higher nutritional value as they are much richer than in the past and their living standards have been greatly raised. Secondly, the nation’s economy has experienced much progress and the market can supply a great variety of high-quality food. Thirdly, people have come to realize the importance of a reasonable diet for healthy life. The change in Chinese people’s diet is a reflection of better living conditions in the 20-year economic reform. It indicates that Chinese people’s life will become happier, healthier and more prosperous.
