答案 This table shows the average family’s expenses in a Chinese city in 1992 and 2002. In 1992, the expenses were distributed in the following way: 20% was spent on housing, 50% on food, and 10% was on ’education; traveling took up 5%, 15% was saved and 5% was used to meet other needs. In 2002, a different picture appeared, housing cost increased by 20%, whereas food cost decreased by 25%. Education and traveling cost went up to 20%, and 10% respectively, while savings fell to 5%. The other expenses remained unchanged. Why did these changes take place? In the first place, because of the housing reform, people had to buy houses by themselves, so there was a big increase in housing cost, while food lost its position as the major cost. In the second place, with the development of our society, people paid more and more attention to education and leisure, which was reflected in the increase of their cost. Finally, as our economy advances, people tend to consume and invest instead of putting the money in the bank. The changes in the family expenses indicate the fundamental changes in people’s life and mind. China is in the era of reform, and with the improvement of the living standards, people have to spend a big part of income to meet the basic needs such as housing and food, however, they are also aware of the importance of education and the quality of life.
