问题     It’s official: Text message mania (狂热) has hit China. Mobile phones are becoming increasingly popular, and so sending text messages is fast becoming the hot new craze (风尚) among teenagers.
Twelve kitties greeted Lin Jiao and wished her a happy new year on the eve of the Chinese lunar calendar’s Year of Monkey (农历猴年), making her very excited.
According to Xinhua Agency (新华社), about 100 million text and picture messages were sent and received by Beijing mobile phone owners during the Spring Festival.
Liu Jiao is a student at the High School Affiliated to Beijing University of Chemical Technology. A third of the students in her class own mobile phones. She received more than 20 text messages from her friends during holidays.
Most of these messages were general greetings, like "Happy New Year", or humorous sentences, like "Love you as mice love rice". One of the good wishes she received was made up of the brand names for eight soft drinks, including Coca-cola and Wahaha. These brand names, when translated into Chinese, were good wishes for happiness or success.
"The creative messages are the best, because they always come as a surprise or amuse (使发笑) me." Liu said.
Along with her friends, Liu often downloads jokes and music from the Internet. On the Net, they search for messages with meaningful flashes, which may simply be made ’up of brackets (号) or full stops and pictures of cartoon characters like Snoopy and Kitty.
"They are ready-made on the Net. All you have to do is to choose your favorite." said a junior student at Beijing Shuangyushu Middle School. He sent a picture of a burning cigarette to his father with the words "Smoking is bad for your health."
Besides the convenience of sending text messages, the relatively low cost attracts many teenagers. A common message usually costs only 0. i to 0. 2 yuan. "We can chat using our mobile phones, just as we could do using the OICQ." Lin explained. Also as the Net was crowded during the holidays, it was much faster and easier to communicate using mobile phones.
According to China Mobile (中国移动), there has been a lot of promotion (宣传推广) for messaging through mobile phone since 1997. The rise in popularity shows that it has worked.
