Bullies on Campuses
A 13-year-old boy from New York, took his own life after being bullied by classmates at school.
In teenager Daniel Fitzpatrick’s tragic suicide note, which was supplied by his parents, he claimed that his old friends at Holy Angels Catholic Academy bullied him repeatedly.
"I gave up," Daniel, who was scheduled to start at Brooklyn’s Xaverian High School in the fall, wrote on lined paper.
"The teachers either they didn’t do anything!" he scrawled in the note.
Daniel’s father posted a video to his Facebook page on Saturday to thank people for their support. In it, he condemns both the boys who "tormented" his son and the Catholic school that reportedly told him, "You’ll be fine. These things will pass. " when the teen went to school officials for help.
"No parent should have to bury their child. No child should have to go through what my son went through. " the father said sorrowfully.
The Brooklyn/Queens Diocese spokesperson told the New York Daily News: " In light of this tragedy we are reexamining all bullying prevention policies and training. The principal, teachers, and staff of Holy Angels Catholic Academy are heartbroken over the loss of Daniel Fitzpatrick. We take the issue of bullying very seriously and address every incident that is brought to our attention. "
But more angry parents said that considering the short-term or long-term trauma bullying always causes, bullies in the school should take responsibilities in laws due to their infringement of others’ rights.

Fight Against Bullies on Campuses A boy’s tragic suicide reveals a tip of the iceberg of school bullying. Bullying on campuses is downplayed. More and more people urge that juridical responsibilities be imposed on bullies due to their infringement of others’ rights. Personally, I think, when criticism and education fail to tackle this issue, legislation must be imposed. Bullying, defined as any deliberate act of intimidating or abuse in any form of another person, brings devastating trauma to its victims who often drop out of school or are emotionally shattered, even turn to suicide. Be it from a growing violence-stricken environment, or the blind imitation of bloodthirsty TV programs, bullying, first of all, must be curbed in clear-cut anti-bullying policy. To put it into effect, schools must dedicate time to discussions and events related to this issue, such as showing films, presenting books, attending speeches and experiential seminars, to show their zero-tolerance attitude toward bullying. Moreover, intervention that helps students connect with groups on campus proves to be working in fighting against bullying. Schools provide so many diverse opportunities with which students may find a niche to fit in rather than stay isolated. Thirdly, in view of students’ unwillingness to call a spade a spade because they view the report of being bullied as creating a negative image of themselves, authorities can build up a website, a helpline, or a walk-in center where the victims’ anonymity is ensured. The last but the most important antidote to bullying is legislation, which will serve as a powerful deterrent for those tormentors. For those who still can’t hold back, they deserve to drink the bitter juice they brew. In conclusion, stricter measures should be taken to solve this thorny issue. Let us pray that one day in the near future we can all live in an environment free from bullying, harassment, discrimination and violence!
