Most people don’t realize how much food they throw away every day from uneaten leftovers to spoiled produce. Wasting food not only is an ethical and economic issue, but also depletes limited natural resources. The trend of wasting food in restaurants and households has to be reversed. Saving food brings many benefits. First and foremost, saving food reduces methane emissions from landfills and lowers our carbon footprint. It can not be neglected that a very significant portion of greenhouse gases are caused by the processing of wasted food. Besides, saving food also contributes to energy and resources conservation. From growing crops, manufacturing, transportation, to cooking, all of these processes consume energy and resources. Last but not least, saving food is a way to eliminate hunger. By ensuring the reduction of food waste, we could potentially feed impoverished people suffering from malnutrition. As we can see from the discussion above, avoiding food waste benefits not only the environment but also human beings. Growing concerns about environmental and economic costs, hunger and resource conservation associated with food waste have raised public awareness of food waste. People should work together to address the issue of food waste.
