For example, in June 1992, with the economy in recession, just 14 percent said they were satisfied with the way things were going in the country.     Some analysts suggest that it is merely whistling past the graveyard. But other analysts say it is more a reflection of the indomitable(不屈不挠) and generous American spirit that showed itself so dramatically in the aftermath(不幸后果) of Sept. 11 (9.11). Rather than pull down the shades and hide under the bed in the face of further terrorism threats and the grim realization that the united States is not as invulnerable as most once thought, Americans poured into the streets and came together in a unity of purpose and resolve not seen since World War II. They rallied around the president and strongly supported the use of military force to combat terrorism. (44)______.
    Are 70 percent of the American people really satisfied with the way things are going in the country right now? (45)______. Yet, there is something running through the Am0rican psyche that causes it to refuse to give in to despair. Call it naive. Call it foolish. Call it whistling past the graveyard. Whatever it is, it’s good to see. With spirit like that, we can be sure that this too will pass.
