Graham’s characteristic percussive style enabled her to express emotional extremes.
3 Always a vehicle for human passion, Graham’s immense body of work prompted both praise and controversy. Although critics faulted her for obscurity or obscenity, Graham’s audiences were enthralled. Perhaps her defining work was "Chronicle," a 1936 dance drama that portrayed the darkness and isolation of the Great Depression and the Spanish Civil War. Her later productions were so rich in terms of music and design that they left audiences spellbound.
