Houses and cars are the big status symbols and some people will spend almost all their money on them, just to look more important than they actually are, The fact that cars are such an important status symbol has helped to create traffic problems in most big cities. Computers are status symbols, even though most people in cities can buy them. I think they show that a person is up-to-date with the latest technology. The latest mobile phones are often considered extremely cool, so people will sometimes buy one, then discard it only a year later for a newer, cooler model. I sometimes wonder if that is how some people treat their boyfriends and girlfriends! — I think that they generally do. Both men and women like to have nice cars and trendy mobile phones. Both sexes also like to wear the latest fashions, although obviously men go for suits and ladies go for dresses. Ladies like jewellery as a symbol of status and wealth. Men don’t usually wear necklaces or bracelets, but they do wear watches. I think that, if you want to appear well off and trendy, there are certain things that you must have. — I think that nice homes and the latest electronic gadgets will still be the most valued possessions. I think that attractive clothes and jewellery will also remain valued. I mean, they have been for hundreds of years and I doubt that will change. I think that it is also possible that people will value hand-crafted and traditional items rather than mass-produced items, because mass-produced items will be so common. — I would like to have an expensive aviator’s watch, hand made in Switzerland. I think it would be great to have a small status symbol like that something that people could notice and comment on, but not something that everyone can see instantly.
