问题 According to the speaker, there are ______ symptoms of culture shock.

Many of you have come to the United States from a foreign country. What has your experience been like? Have you noticed that your experience has changed or evolved? In what way? This period of cultural adjustment has often been called "culture shock"—the impact of being in a culture which is very different from our own.
    There are several symptoms of culture shock. These include the following:
    .Concern about cleanliness, such as concerns that the water is clean and that the food is cleans;
    .Concerns over minor pains;
    .Anger about delays, frustrations over small things;
    .Feeling that you have been cheated, taken advantage of;
    .Not learning the language of the culture;
    .A strong desire to be with people from your own country.
    One of the first researchers to describe the stages of culture shock was Oberg in 1953. He identified four stages in the host culture.
    The first stage is the "honeymoon" stage, where everything is wonderful and new. The person is very happy to be in the new culture. This can last up to several months.
    The next stage is the "hostility" stage, when the person becomes very impatient and irritable with the host country, especially in dealing with normal, everyday activities like shopping, using transportation, dealing with government agencies. During this stage, the person usually seeks out members of his or her culture, and they criticize the host culture together.
    The third stage of cultural adjustment is the "humor" stage. At this point, the person has developed a sense of humor about his or her experience, has learned the language, and is able to laugh at the situation.
    The final stage is the "home" stage. The person has accepted the new culture and recognizes that it is another way of doing things. The person is able to see both positive and negative aspects of the culture.
    When the person returns home to his or her culture, a similar experience occurs. This is called "re-entry crisis". It can be quite traumatic to return, because the person doesn’t expect to have any difficulty adapting to his or her own culture.
    There are several advantages to endure culture shock:
    .It helps a person to recognize that he or she is influenced enormously by one’s own culture;
    .It helps people to confront their own culture and learn that their behavior is a product of that culture’s assumptions, values, and beliefs;
    .It forces people to examine themselves and be introspective—something they may not have done if they had stayed in their own country;
    .It provides the individual with a rich source of knowledge and diversity of experiences, which pro rides a broader point of future comparisons and contrasts.
    Are there any questions or comments about this material?
    Next week we’ll look at frameworks for examining cultural differences—something that will he useful for those of you who are from a different culture. And then the following week we’ll have a test on the lectures and readings we’ve done so far.
