What is particularly striking is that, in 2014, the population in urban areas of the city has increased roughly by 30,000, while that in rural areas has increased approximately by 10,000, experiencing a slow growth. There are several driving forces behind this trend. One rational explanation for this disparity is that the bulk of labor forces flood into large cities, such as Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, to seek more working opportunities. An investigation conducted by an expert group reveals that 70% of the youngsters from the countryside claim that they yearn for dwelling in large cities. Another notable fact is the acceleration of China’s urbanization process, which is a lure for the agricultural population. Last but not least, the systematic antinomy should share part of the blame. Given the arguments above, in the next few years, the city will also witness a bigger, faster and imbalanced population growth. However, we ought not to be panic, but to be confident in that this tendency bestows more benefits on rural citizens, boosts economic growth and even pushes the society forward.
