Which of the following does the student say is an advantage of studying Spanish?
S Excuse me. Professor Miller. Can I talk to you for a few minutes? I need to ask you about my classes.
A Hello, Lisa. I know it’s a bit late, but Merry Christmas. Are you having problems with any of your classes? I know that you are taking a full course load this term. It must be tough to keep up with all the readings and assignments.
S It is tough. I don’t think I’ve had a full night’s sleep in a month. But I’m not here about that. I was wondering if you could help me choose a second major. Most of the students getting business degrees have them, so I think I should get one, too.
A I see. Well, I should start by telling you that just because other people are doing something does not mean that you should. I hope you’re not thinking about a double major just because of your classmates.
S Actually, there’s more than one reason I want a double major, but keeping up with my classmates is important to me. Once we graduate, we’ll be applying for the same jobs, so I’m worried that their resumes will look better than mine. A lot of them are getting second majors in math or advertising.
A That’s right. I’m glad to see you’re thinking ahead. I guess the question now is which second major will look the best to future employers. Any ideas?
S I am contemplating adding a language major, but I’m unsure which one to choose. It’s a tossup between Spanish and Japanese.
A You already speak Spanish fluently, don’t you? Why would you bother taking classes in a language you already know? Sort of a waste of time, isn’t it?
S It depends on how you look at it. I know that I could pass the Spanish classes with flying colors, which would help my overall grade point average. Basically, I could improve my marks, have a double major on my degree, and, most importantly, not have to worry too much about killing myself with extra work.
A That does make a lot of sense, now that you’ve explained it. But, aren’t you in university to learn more, not just collect grades? You said you might want to study Japanese. Tell me why?
S Speaking Japanese would really help me in the business world. I know it would give me an edge in finding a job and getting promoted. But, I’m already in my second year of school, which does not leave a lot of time to really master another language before I graduate.
A Right. At best, you could expect to spend a lot of time studying, but you’d only be a low intermediate speaker. You’d never learn enough to really do business in Japanese.
S So you think I should take the Spanish classes? I guess you’re right. Besides, there are many countries that use Spanish, but only one that uses Japanese. Well, at any rate, I don’t have to make up my mind for another week. I’ll give it more thought.
A Come back and we can talk more if you want. I’m always here for the students.
A That’s right. I’m glad to see you’re thinking ahead. I guess the question now is which second major will look the best to future employers. Any ideas?
S I am contemplating adding a language major, but I’m unsure which one to choose. It’s a toss up between Spanish and Japanese,
