答案 More Foreign Languages Should be Taught in Universities in China Under the BRI The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) is a strategy initiated by the People’s Republic of China in 2013 that seeks to connect Asia with Africa and Europe via land and maritime networks with the aim of improving regional integration, increasing trade and stimulating economic growth. As far as I am concerned, China should accelerate the teaching of various foreign languages, not just English, as the country’s Belt and Road Initiative progresses. The reasons are as follows. First of all, language ability is the foundation of connection among people. There are at least 53 official languages spoken in the 65 countries and regions involved in the BRI, but only about 20 of them have been taught at higher educational institutions in China. The lack of people who speak a foreign language other than English can affect our communication with and understanding of people from other countries, which will not benefit the cultural exchange between China and other BRI countries and regions. Therefore, more foreign languages, especially those minor languages, should be taught in universities in China. Besides, mastering more languages is important for the development of our country and the BRI. As the BRI is being implemented, countries along the Belt and Road are gaining momentums. Against this background, translation services are of great significance in the process of policy coordination and connectivity of infrastructure. A report published by the State Information Center affiliated with the National Development and Reform Commission in 2017 said that around 95 percent of the 423 agencies providing language translation services in the country do Chinese-English translation. However, only 2. 6 percent of them provide translation services from Chinese to the other small languages other than three major ones-English, Japanese and French. This can also eventually disturb China’s communication with other BRI countries and regions. Last but not least, universities should adapt their education plan in accordance with the national strategy. In the long run, the employment market needs a lot of students majoring in minor languages. Recently, some China-invested companies even come to schools in Iran, Israel and Turkey to introduce their employment needs. Some private enterprises may need ever more relevant talents when they explore markets in Middle East countries. Therefore, it is clear that a large number of these graduates will be needed to engage in translation, sales, public relations, customer connection and other work in the fields of diplomacy, foreign affairs and foreign trade. In response to this, education authorities should increase the country’s investment in non-English foreign language education at universities. In conclusion, universities should give more attention to their foreign language education and develop new foreign language majors in order to respond to the country’s strategic development. In this way, the five major priorities-policy coordination, connectivity of infrastructure, unimpeded trade, financial integration and closer people-to-people ties—defined by the BRI, can be achieved in a better way.
