答案
The Basic Purpose of College Education At a time when more and more people flock into universities but fewer and fewer so-called backbones of our country achieve great success, people begin to contemplate what is the true purpose of tertiary education. And I do deem that it should satisfy social needs for career training, social network and the development of individual inner qualities. First, it goes without saying that practice goes deeper than theoretical knowledge. When students attend college, all their knowledge of Chinese, Math, English, etc. will transfer into college basic education leading them to a specific major. With a systematic study of a variety of courses concerning the major, it can pave the way for the future of students, who can engage into the careers they strive for. That accounts for why I believe career training is the essential purpose of higher education. And second, as Kant once said, "Education has for its object the formation of character." Tertiary education should spare no effort to spawn new generation of people with lofty ideals, moral integrity, good education and a strong sense of discipline. That’s also what our society and time call for. Besides, I reckon that only when we are equipped with those qualities can we survive the fierce job-hunting jungle. In a nutshell, higher education, to some degree, represents the comprehensive strength of the country, which, undoubtedly, should provide career training, social network and cultivate students’ individual inner qualities.
