It would seem that there are some people who have never learned to listen. They can be a real problem to their friends and family, as well as to anyone else who tries to talk with them. Such people are so wrapped up in what they have to say that they cannot be bothered with listening to anyone’ else. You, like others,: probably have learned that it is not much fun trying to carry on a conversation with someone who does not listen. Listening is a skill. Because it is a skill, you must practise if you are to become really good at it. There is a difference between hearing and listening, though that idea may never have occurred to you before. Think about this, for instance: you can hear a new song being sung, but if you want to. learn the words, you must really listen with your mind as well as with your ears. Listening means giving your full attention to a sound. Hearing is,. in other words, mostly a matter of the ear; listening, of the ear and the mind.
