Nowadays, the decline of moral standard is widely lamented in the whole society: people no longer so readily offer a hand to the elderly who slip onto the ground; they are hesitant or even indifferent when someone cries out for help in emergency; they turn a blind eye when seeing public properties to be taken illegally. In my opinion, to lament without taking any practical action can not boost the sense of morality. A good social environment fostered by every citizen’s effort is an effective solution. A sound social environment is an environment where people are encouraged to do good things, to be nice to others and are restricted to do immoral things. The power of positive evaluation and encouragement from society is great, because positive evaluation and encouragement can educate people from within. It sets a standard by which people can identify what is good and what is bad. And the power of social opinion can never be ignored. A hostile environment can only frustrate and hurt people who have high moral standards. Suppose you voluntarily go out to help the old lady who lives alone next to you, but what you meet is the skeptical look and sarcastic words from other neighbors, how much courage is there left for you to persist? At the same time, a sound social environment is necessary in that it puts pressure on those who will do immoral things. To do immoral things or not is certainly a matter of self-decision, and is usually just a decision of a moment at which the power of bad environment is decisive. If the immoral behavior is condemned by the whole society, then possible bad doers will think twice; if the environment is hostile towards moral behavior, then a good doer will have to rely on his or her own sense of morality to persist. A sound social environment clearly fixes the line between good and bad, and it teaches every member what kind of thing should be done or not. Therefore, a sound social environment is the best condition under which morally good behavior will be held in esteem while bad behavior will be punished and frustrated, thus our kids will be positively guided and properly led to the right course of behavior.
